They stimulate neuronal differentiation of immature neurons and regulate neuronal functions of mature neurons such as protection from accidental neuronal death. Recent discoveries of new NTS differing from the nerve growth factor (NGF), a prototype of neurotrophic factors, provide indication that neurons respond to plural NTS Which function in various types of neurons. Ordered neurogenesis and neuronal regeneration proceed properly following the timely- and/or spatially-regulated expression of NTS and their receptors.
