Octylsilylated silicagel plate (Merck HPTLC RP-8 F_<254s>) and 50% (v/v) aqueous ethanol were usually served as stationary and mobile phases, respectively. The R_M values thus obtained were independent of the pH and the ionic strength of the aqueous component in the mobile phase. Also, the R_M values were correlated significantly to the logP values for compounds in each group mentioned above (P : partition coefficient determined by shake-flask method on 1-Octanol-water system). Although the slopes of the regression equations are almost independent of the chemical structures without regard to the said classification of samples, the intercepts at the ordinate depend on the groups. However, a good correlation between R_M and logP of all the substances used here was obtained by introducing the three indicator variables representing the characteristics of structures pertaining to each group.
