Yeast pheromone-mediated signal transduction is extensively investigated, because it may share some commomn features with the pathways mediated by growth and differentiation factors in higher eukaryotes. Especially, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has extensively studied by using a combination of genetic, molecular, and biochemical approaches ; it was suggested that each of the haploid mating types expresses a set of proteins specific to that mating type, including the sexual agglutinins, peptide pheromones, and pheromone receptors. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe have two mating-types, h^- (M) and h^+ (p). Studies on the mating substances of S. pombe , however, have started later than those of budding yeasts. The mating pheromone, M-factor, of M cells has only recently been isolated and purified.
